Our Real Weather
Its Not As Rumored... Of course, it rains. But Seattle winter rain becomes Midwest and Eastern snow. No blizzards, tornadoes or hurricanes but lush year-around vegetation and mild, gorgeous summers. Less precipitation than New York City, Atlanta, even Houston.
Where It Comes From... Our weather mostly comes off the Pacific Ocean. Through the Strait of Juan de Fuca past Victoria. Over the Olympic Mountains. From Ocean Shores on the central Washington coast in through the Chehalis River valley toward Olympia and then up Puget Sound. It all bumps up against the Cascade Mountains and converges north of Seattle.
Spring... Sun breaks highlight the beauty of blooming bushes and trees, roadside daffodils, and lush forests. Days become decidedly long. Highs into the mid-60s with lows in the 40s.
Summer... Glorious! Highs in the 70s. Lows in the 50s. Less rain than Tucson, Albuquerque or El Paso. Too many days over 80 brings cooler air from the ocean. Days are sunny and very long. Great for playing outside in the evenings.
Fall... September starts cooling down. October often provides a pleasant Indian Summer. By time for Thanksgiving, we're getting some good rains and exhilarating winds. Great for cozy evening fires.
Winter... Rain and maybe a little snow. And some wind storms [nothing's perfect]. Lows usually are above freezing. Highs average close to 50... a surprise to many newcomers.
Oh, Yes That Rain! General rule-of-thumb, it averages out to about 35" a year. Mostly in late Fall and Winter. Wetter in the south, drier in the north.
Just as with real estate, our weather is still a matter of location, location, location. Weather Underground has created a network of Personal Weather Stations which provide real-time weather information. Our most sophisticated one is at Central Market in Poulsbo.
